Jobless man charged with defrauding girlfriend

An unemployed man, Chukwu Chiagozie, who allegedly defrauded his girlfriend of N185, 000 on the pretext of securing an accommodation for her, was arraigned on Wednesday in Lagos.

The resident of New Market Street, Orile- Iganmu, Chiagozie, 27, is facing a charge of obtaining money under false pretences at an Itire Magistrate’s Court.

The prosecutor, Inspector Olakunle Shonibare, told the court that the accused committed the offence sometime in August 2013.

He alleged that the accused absconded after he obtained N185, 000 from his girlfriend with a promise to secure an accommodation for her.

Shonibare explained that in the course of their relationship, the accused proposed to his girlfriend and complainant, Esther Nwaneka.

“The accused later brought up the idea of renting an apartment for himself and his girlfriend.

“The complainant’s effort to reach the accused after he collected N185, 000 proved abortive.

“The accused had been avoiding the complainant since 2013 until he was apprehended recently,’’ he said.

Chiagozie, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Magistrate, Mrs. A.O. Gbajumo, admitted him to bail in the sum of N20, 000 with one surety in like sum.

She adjourned the case till June 18 for trial.
